A Burnt-Out Case begins with an anonymous European (apparently wealthy, as he drinks whiskey and smokes cigars) riding "the Bishop's boat" on the Congo river into Africa. This man talks little, simply riding along as the boat makes customary stops at seminaries and docks along the way. What intelligent reader could really believe A Burnt-Out Case, for example, or The Honorary Consul, to be a better book than The Ministry of Fear or A Gun for Sale.
My own opinion is that Greene's. A Burnt-Out Case is the story of Querry’s time in the leper colony and of his interactions with the people there. There is the doctor, who has his hands full with patients and works tirelessly from morning to night; also, he is a confirmed atheist and is there for no other reason than to use his skills to alleviate pain and suffering.
There he is assigned a servant- Deo Gratias- a "burnt-out case"- a leper who loses everything that can be eaten away before he is cured. And there Querry, who is obviously just as mutilated, attempts to remain uninvolved. Deo Gratias' disappearance however impels him to go out and search for him in the bush- and save his life.
